Is Amazon’s Kindle Asking For Another RIAA Fiasco?

From an INC tech blogger:

So the Kindle is interesting in that it raises the question of intellectual property and how that differs when it is a printed material in your hand as opposed to a set of bits on an electronic device. This is an issue society is still working out. IP is different than physical things, it just is. But in order for humanity to progress, people need to profit from it in my opinion and so such property needs protection of some kind.

Amazon Kindle is used as an example for everything, in this instance copyright law.  Admittedly, it’s a damn good example.  As a writer, do you want people everywhere getting copies of your book free?  What is more important, the message and the words or making money?

There are those that feel as with everything, it seems everything is about how to turn an extra profit off of one thing or another.

True, I am a writer and I sell art but I can also understand both sides- I can understand  making a profit, I can also understand the logic in giving people free rein.

I suppose this is the problem with all of this.

On one hand you have people who think everything should be free.  Or even once you buy something, you should be able to distribute it at will.  Then there are the people who want each and every person to shell out more money so they can survive.

If your livelihood is based around writing, or art, or software, or a bunch of other things that this whole thing would apply to don’t you have the right to charge?  Should you, if you put your word out there, expect people not to share?  Even with a normal book, people will share it amongst themselves.

Yes, this is all “uncharted territory”?  People do pirate software, then again that turns things into a vicious circle.

To illustrate I’ll use Adobe Photoshop (seriously, Photoshop is asking for it.  It’s what, $600 bucks?):

Jacked price already --> Pirating Due to Jacked up Price -->Jack up price even more to combat losses.

That pretty much sums up the problem (at least with software).

Although, I must admit art and books don’t really it that cycle.  Then again  Kindle’s book library has a ton in it, so I doubt many of them are really that worried overall.  This is (at least it seems) like yet another much adieu about absolutely nothing scenario.  Then again, if the writers are fine the rest should logically be too right?

Oh yeah, that’s right.  The RIAA fiasco…  ‘Cause nothing says I mean business like arresting a whole bunch of 13 year olds…

Didn’t they say something along these lines about people who were downloading music?

This seems suspiciously just like RIAA and it’s music industry bs from a few years ago.  Last time I checked the musicians still are loaded and the industry isn’t exactly crumbling. Eh, time shall tell.  I’m just hoping a bit that this won’t turn into yet another junk waste of money government fiasco.
